Puppies usually bite because they are teething. Just like our children, when they are born, a set of temporary teeth will emerge in their first months of life. Around the age of 4 months, these baby teeth will start falling out, allowing the stronger permanent teeth to grow in. When this happens, the gums of your dog are painful, itching, and swollen, so they will feel the need to chew on something to calm down.

If this is the case, and you have a puppy that is going through the teething period, all you have to do is get him something to chew on. There are special puppy toys and bones that you could give him, which will be accepted to chew and bite. You should be firm when telling him “no”, each time he goes for your hand, and praise the dog when playing with the toy you gave him. Also, if the weather outside is warm and sunny, you can use a clean piece of cloth, soaked in water, and placed in the freezer until it freezes solid. The cold ice will be hard enough while also helping the young dog calm down his sore gums. But, in case your dog bites out of other reasons but teething, you may have a serious problem. There are many causes that can lead a dog to biting and you need to identify the cause if you want to know how to stop your dog from biting in the right manner. Help. I don’t know what else to do. I have a 1 yr old pup named lulu. She is part German Shepherd and part blue heeler. I bought her through blue chip. She is a biter. She bites my children our other dog which is a cocker spaniel. We took her to 2 trainers and nothing worked. We were told keep her on a leash at all times. Put a shock collar on her. I don’t know what to do. Plz anyone with suggestions I would love to hear.

we have a jack russell that is 10 months old and has been desexed. We did buy him for my daughter but he has become more attached to me. over the past few months when one of the kids approach him to play or to talk to him out of the blue he will snap at them and has even broken skin. i even patted him one morning and he bit me on the hand breaking the skin we have had him checked at the vet and he has the all clear and no problem with his teeth, we take him out for walks all the time to get rid of some energy. he is home alone during the day while we are at work and the kids are at school. The kids are 13 and 10 and have never hurt him although my son does play tug of war and will wrestle with him on the floor. its getting to the point that my daughter is too scared to go near him – any suggestions ?
